Best Extreme Sports in Peru

Many foreign visitors to Peru are happy with a relaxing few days travelling around ancient Inca archaeological sites, kicking-back in luxury hotels, and riding exclusive trains to Machu Picchu. But if your dream getaway is a taking things to the max in search of extreme thrills and fun, then you won’t be disappointed either! Peru can offer it all! Here are the 5 best extreme sports in Peru.

Extreme Mountain Biking

Peru was made for mountain biking, after all the Andes – the world’s longest mountain chain runs right down the centre of the country, peaking at 22,132 feet (6,746 m) in the Cordillera Blanca in central Peru. Possibly one of the most extreme sports in Peru with locals and foreigners alike, there are literally thousands of places to find fast fun down-hill thrills. In Cusco there is a handful of specialist travel agents that offer a range of different day (and multi-day) trips, with full suspension Kona bikes. Our favourite extreme ride is the 1 day Mega-Avalanche single track ride, that starts at the top of Abra Malaga in the Sacred Valley (close to Cusco) and descends 1600 meters to the village of Ollantaytambo. Oh, and you can do it three times!

You wouldn’t think so, but yes, Peru is actually one of the world’s best surfing spots. Along the northern coastline, Peru offers waves for everyone from beginners to pros. Peru has produced many world surfing champions, and it’s easy to see why when you understand just how good the waves are. Chicama has the world’s longest left-handed wave in the world at 4km’s long, and Mancora (close by) has the world’s largest left-handed point-break in the world. Extreme sports in Peru don’t get much better than this!

During the 1960s, the small oasis town of Huacachina was once a holiday hot-spot for rich limenians. Nowadays, this rather less glamorous place is the home of one of the most fun and extreme sports in Peru – Sand-boarding. Located 7 km’s from the main city of Ica, Huacachina is surrounded by vast sand dunes which stretch as far as the eye can see. There are only a handful of hostels in the town, but all of them will rent you sand-board for a few soles per day. Cover yourself from head-to-toe in sun-block and start climbing! It’s fun, cheap, thrilling and often painful!

White Water Rafting

With so many mountains, there are bound to be quite a lot of fast flowing and rocky rivers to enjoy. Rafting is probably one of the most common extreme sports in Peru, and in the region of Cusco, there are many expert travel agencies that will take you out on the river. The Urubamba River (in the Sacred Valley) offers a thrilling full day experience which is suitable for beginners through to intermediary rafters. But hard-core rafters looking for the ultimate thrill need to go a little further afield. Cotahuasi Canyon is the deepest canyon in the world, and is also home to one of the world’s toughest rafting challenges. The route includes 6 days of full-on, technical class 4 – 5 rapids, uncharted pre-Inca ruins and spectacular campsites. Extreme sports in Peru don’t get much better than this! But be warned the Cotahuasi raft is for only the toughest travellers!

Zip Lines in the Jungle

15 Km’s from Machu Picchu, close to the village of Santa Teresa is Peru’s first canopy top zip line (also known as flying fox). A series cables with a total length of 2500 meters are broken up into six sections, with the longest section being 400 meters in length. At the fastest point on the wire it is possible to reach speeds of 60 Km/h (37 mph), which is enough to give the sensation of flight! Make sure that you are not scared of heights either, as part of the line hang 150 meters above the jungle floor. Extreme sports in Peru don’t get much more fun than this!

Of-course there are a whole bunch of other great things to see and do in Peru, but if you think that there are better extreme sports in Peru than the ones listed, we would love to hear your thoughts!

Extreme Sports Equal

Studies show that participation in a sport gives us the motivation to get and stay in shape. But what sport? Many of us grew up participating in team sports such as football, basketball, baseball, softball or soccer. Now, as adults, it is hard to get a group together to play these sports so we need to find an activity which we can participate in alone or with our life partner. Running, walking, biking, paddling, swimming and weight lifting are activities that come to mind which can be done solo or with our partner. However, we often become bored with these activities and find ourselves wanting to take a look at elevating them to another, more extreme level.

Running can be taken to what some would consider the extreme level by participating in a marathon which is 26 plus miles, or even to the more extreme level of ultra-marathon which is 50 or even 100 miles. If the individual is prepared, the benefits of long distance running are great for both mental and physical health. That’s not to say you will run fast, but with training and will power you can finish and feel really good about yourself in the process. It is a matter of challenging yourself and taking the time to train.

Swimming can also be taken to the level of endurance swimming for long distances, although most people do this by getting involved in triathlons that involve swimming, running and biking. The ultimate challenge would be the Ironman Triathlon which involves and 2.54 mile swim, 112 mile bike race and finally a marathon. Participation in this event takes a great deal of dedication and training.

Road biking, one of the better know long distance endurance activities is taken to another level when it is taken off the road and turned into mountain biking. Mountain biking involves cycling on hiking trails and couples steep uphill climbs with exhilarating downhill runs. Mountain biking is great exercise and takes as much nerve as it does training.

Paddling is also stepped up when you put your canoe or kayak into rapidly flowing white water. Anyone who has paddled fifteen miles on a section of river with class 3 and class 4 rapids will attest to the fact that this is an extreme workout. However, white water paddling is probably one of the most dangerous of extreme sports so start slow and gain as much experience as you can.

Weight lifting and strength training finds it own extreme in outdoor Rock Climbing. Rock climbing can occur at many levels, from bouldering to multi-pitch/multi-day climbs such as the big wall of Half Dome in Yosemite. A blend a balance, agility, flexibility and strength all come into play. With the fear of falling added in, rock climbing will get you pumped greater than any weight machine.

It is recommended that if you think you might want to take your sport to the extreme, you should first consult your doctor to see that your body is ready to step it up. Next you need to consult an expert, do some research and if possible take a class. In doing so, you will get extreme exercise out of your extreme sport and have an extreme high in the process.

Space Diving Is the Ultimate Extreme Sport

Space diving is when a person jumps from a plane or spacecraft high enough to enter the Earth’s atmosphere. According to a 2007 article in the Telegraph out of the United Kingdom, this extreme sport will soon become a popular daredevil sport just like bungee jumping and skydiving.

In 1960 US Air Force captain Joe Kittinger jumped from an altitude of 20 miles and reached a speed of 700 miles while diving from space. Now skydiving enthusiasts want to break this record. Those who wish to engage in this extreme sport should also be aware that the risk of death is very likely and so far 22 people have died while trying to do this.

There are a few brave persons that are willing to do space diving. Daredevil Felix Baumgartner plans to achieve this goal during the summer and he wants to leap from a height of 36 kilometers above New Mexico according to the Space Exploration Network. Baumgartner also feels that with his projected victory he’ll get people interested in space diving as an extreme sport.

Because diving from low earth orbit (LEO) is an extreme form of skydiving, you should get months of training with a certified trainer who has experience in the sport. You should also purchase specialized accident insurance and life insurance because this activity is high-risk and you could suffer injuries or even death. You should also research which types of suits and other gear that’s required for space diving. Ask your instructor lots of questions and make sure you’re physically and mentally prepared before you make your first (and maybe only) attempt.

Researchers are developing an ideal suit for space divers in the future. They mentioned that the suit will contain a detachable helmet, gloves and boots and this suit will include a liquid-cooled thermal regulation system. The suit will have small gas jets to help the body adjust to weightlessness while in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and this suit will come with protection against oxygen leaks.

There are some benefits of space diving. It allows you to explore your planet in a way you can’t explore just by reading about it or watching documentaries about the planet. If you go space jumping you’re in a better place to discuss what you learned about the planet with others. Space diving allows you to take risks in life and accomplish a goal that very few people are able to do. It also tests your human abilities and mental strength in ways you never thought of.

Awesome Extreme Sports

When you think of sports what do you think of? Maybe you think of football, soccer, basketball or baseball. Well, in the world of sports there is much more than just the classic sports you always hear about.

I have made a list of 3 extreme sports that will be sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Extreme sports, un-like other sports, are always exciting and are usually somewhat dangerous. The danger is the reason they are so exciting and why they are so extreme.

Let’s take a look at these sports and who knows, maybe you’ll find one your interested in and take on a whole new lifestyle.

1. The first sport on our list is motocross. I am sure you know what this is but incase you don’t, it’s when a lot of people race dirt bikes around a man-made track with jumps, whoops, berms and many more features. This is extremely fast paced and exciting to watch.

What is even more exciting is actually participating in the sport. It is a little expensive to start but it is an investment that keeps on giving. Just be sure that you get the proper protective gear because it is a dangerous sport. If you have a chance be sure to go watch a professional race as the professionals ride faster than you could believe.

2. Now let’s check out freestyle motocross. This is where riding dirt bikes truly gets insane. This is where people will do tricks on their dirt bikes.

Freestyle motocross is probably most known because of the freestyle competitions held at the X-Games every year. Riders will take their bikes off of 70 foot jumps doing backflips, grabs, different body movements and pretty much every trick you can possibly imagine. It truly is spectacular.

Keep in mind that performing tricks on a dirt bike is extremely difficult and you should always try tricks into a foam pit before taking them to the dirt.

3. The last sport on our list is cliff jumping. This is something everyone can do but is still exhilarating and very extreme.

Cliff jumping is where you find a cliff or ledge that towers above a body of water and jump from it into the water. This is something that everyone should try at least once.

If you ask around I am sure someone you know will tell you of a place that you can do this safely.

A few things to keep in mind are to not jump off of anything too tall (15-35 feet is ideal), always check to make sure the water is deep enough so you don’t hit the ground and make sure you jump out far enough to land in the deep water.

Better yet, after he gets his gear and gets going, break out your hi-res camera with telephoto lens and get a few shots of him in full action at a meet or event. You can get custom vinyl wall decals made with your own images.

Appeal to the Individual
Action sports are primarily one person pitting themselves against a challenge. Having sports wall decals of the heroes of these sports can only encourage your own kids to explore how to be successful as their own person.

Extreme sports wall decals depict high performing and achieving individuals in action. Fans of extreme sports learn that individual achievements are important and possible. Being able to rely on yourself to accomplish a goal is an important talent to cultivate.

Significance of Wearing Protective Gears in Extreme Sports

Extreme sports are sports filled with fun and adventure. When you are out playing a specific type of extreme sport, you feel the intense adrenaline rush and the loud beat of your heart. Every inch of you is getting weak especially when it is your first time to play the game. You will be facing pressure and most of all expectations from the one who supports and believes in you and most especially to those who are watching you. This is the real scenario when you are still a beginner on a certain type of extreme sport.

You will definitely learn to love the chosen extreme sport once you already got a hang of it. It will already be easy for you to do stunts and tricks and you will no longer feel weak every time you step out of the arena or the field where the sport is being played. The main key in order for you to become and feel like a professional is constant practice. Practice makes everything perfect. Though there is no such thing as perfect but at least you are close to achieving a smooth and beautiful performance. When the audience sees every move that you make, they will really be amazed and stunned like they were hit by zap stun guns.

It is not only constant practice that should be done when planning to play a certain type of extreme sport such as snowboarding, skateboarding, biking, mountain climbing and a whole lot more but there should also be dedication and perseverance. In almost any aspect of life, determination and perseverance is applied. Remember that there are challenges that we need to go through and when we are learning a certain type of extreme sport, we need to be determined and persevere despite of the accidents and failures in order for us to learn the fundamentals and become a pro.

From the name itself, extreme which means it has been taken beyond the limits. When we hear the word we think about how dangerous it can possibly be. It really is dangerous and it requires every player to wear protective gears to prevent possible injuries.

Helmet is a protective gear that keeps the head protected as the player plays the game. There are some who do not wear this due to the fact that they feel uncomfortable and that it ruins their appearance. Helmets are like tazer holsters. They give protection and keep the head safe from accidents.

Another protective gear is knee pads or elbow pads. Since the knees and elbows are most common areas of injury, it is a must that players of extreme sports wear such to protect their knees and elbows. If the elbows and knees are not protected, it may lead to paralysis or severe bone injuries when the player is caught in an accident.

The clothes you wear while playing the sport can also protect you. Say for example in snowboarding, players needs to wear water proof jackets to keep them from freezing. Light clothes are important to wear in order for the player to move freely, feel comfortable and for the player to do his stunts effectively.

Eye wear like goggles and sunglasses are important too as this protects your eyes against any flying debris. Like in mountain biking, you need to protect your eyes so that you can have a clear visualization of the field or in the road.

Once you are playing an extreme sport, you need to focus well and think of nothing else but the game. This is your only chance of succeeding in every sport. And your only chance to be a professional.

Extreme Sports in Low Gravity Environments

It goes without saying that humans love to watch the X-games on TV – those extreme sport athletes on skateboards, bungees, motorcycles, parachutes, stunt planes, and what not. Often we see these dare devils as Red Bull addicted thrill seekers with a death wish, who knows maybe some are. Yes, they are adrenaline junkies if there ever was such a thing. Of course, all these extreme sports are done here on Earth, but in the future, extreme sports will follow humankind as he boldly goes to other worlds as well.

Science fiction writer Ben Bova once described sporting events that might be played on an asteroid, and even Carl Sagan made some comments about extreme sports being played on asteroids. Consider if you will a human attached to a giant bungee cord running across a spinning asteroid and jumping as far and as hard as he could to escape it’s small Gravity Dwell (escape velocity), and then floating in space behind the asteroid until the bungee cord stretched out and pulled him back?

But extreme sports on asteroids are not the only types of extreme sports which will be conquered in the future. On Mars there are very deep canyons, and I can imagine people running and jumping off the side of those canyons with some sort of device to slow down their fall. One of the canyons on Mars is so deep it goes for nearly 20 miles. We don’t have any canyons on Earth that are that deep, not even close. So you can imagine what an extremist sporting event that would be – the ultimate B.A.S.E. jump indeed.

The moon also has holes on it, and giant tubes created by lava hundreds of millions of years ago. Surely humans will wish to do a little rock climbing, bungee jumping, and other extreme endeavors there. Further, there will be orbiting space hotels and colonies as well, and in zero gravity there are all kinds of fun things humans can do in the way of sports. And as you know humans will always find a way to entertain themselves, so you can bet they will try.

Now then, I imagine that’s humans will videotape all their adventures, and place these videos on their Facebook pages, and allow people to download their expeditions, and extreme jumps into Virtual Reality Holographic living room gaming devices. This way people at home will be able to enjoy the exact same experience here on Earth that other humans are enjoying on the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and orbiting space stations. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Extreme Sports

An Introduction to Bungee Jumping

Bungee jumping is one of the most extreme sports that people take part in worldwide. The first attempt at this extreme sport was in 1979 when a ‘dangerous sports’ team from England devised the bungee device that is still in use today. The first bungee jump was made successfully from the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

“Awesome Extreme Sport”

In 1986 a man named A.J. Hackett did his first jump in New Zealand. He went on to jump off a number of important buildings including the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Not long after this, bungee jumping really came into its own as an extreme sport and is now a popular activity throughout the world for extreme sports lovers. But how safe really is it? And what are the odds of dying in a bungee jumping accident?

Bungee Cords

Due to the high risk element associated with the sport, chemists and physicists are constantly striving to make improvements in the make up of bungee cord. The bungee cord that is used today is predominantly made up of rubber and synthetic materials. When creating the equipment, the height and weight of different people are taken into account in order to ensure survival. Different cords are used for different weighted people to ensure maximum safety. It is up to scientists to make sure they use a medium between flexible and stiff in order to let the extreme sportsman enjoy the sport and keep him alive.

Before even thinking about doing a bungee jump 99.9% of people will want to be completely assured that they will be safe from harm. Statistics show that there is only a two in one million chance of dying from this sport, making it pretty safe especially when compared to other extreme sports like scuba diving and rock climbing. Adding to this, it may (or may not) be reassuring to know that almost all accidents that have happened have not occurred due to the actual bungee, but due to the operators not attaching the cord to the person or the building correctly. The producers of bungee cords are more than efficient at their job.

When compared to other sports it is not uncommon for many people to believe bungee jumping is more dangerous. Take sky diving for instance – due to the high numbers of ‘ordinary’ people that take part in this sport, many people believe it is relatively safe. It is a generally safe sport but when compared to bungee jumping the odds of dying are much higher. The same can be said for parachute jumping and scuba diving. If you’ve thought about doing a bungee jump, why not research it further? The odds of dying are very small!
