Many foreign visitors to Peru are happy with a relaxing few days travelling around ancient Inca archaeological sites, kicking-back in luxury hotels, and riding exclusive trains to Machu Picchu. But if your dream getaway is a taking things to the max in search of extreme thrills and fun, then you won’t be disappointed either! Peru can offer it all! Here are the 5 best extreme sports in Peru.

Extreme Mountain Biking

Peru was made for mountain biking, after all the Andes – the world’s longest mountain chain runs right down the centre of the country, peaking at 22,132 feet (6,746 m) in the Cordillera Blanca in central Peru. Possibly one of the most extreme sports in Peru with locals and foreigners alike, there are literally thousands of places to find fast fun down-hill thrills. In Cusco there is a handful of specialist travel agents that offer a range of different day (and multi-day) trips, with full suspension Kona bikes. Our favourite extreme ride is the 1 day Mega-Avalanche single track ride, that starts at the top of Abra Malaga in the Sacred Valley (close to Cusco) and descends 1600 meters to the village of Ollantaytambo. Oh, and you can do it three times!


You wouldn’t think so, but yes, Peru is actually one of the world’s best surfing spots. Along the northern coastline, Peru offers waves for everyone from beginners to pros. Peru has produced many world surfing champions, and it’s easy to see why when you understand just how good the waves are. Chicama has the world’s longest left-handed wave in the world at 4km’s long, and Mancora (close by) has the world’s largest left-handed point-break in the world. Extreme sports in Peru don’t get much better than this!


During the 1960s, the small oasis town of Huacachina was once a holiday hot-spot for rich limenians. Nowadays, this rather less glamorous place is the home of one of the most fun and extreme sports in Peru – Sand-boarding. Located 7 km’s from the main city of Ica, Huacachina is surrounded by vast sand dunes which stretch as far as the eye can see. There are only a handful of hostels in the town, but all of them will rent you sand-board for a few soles per day. Cover yourself from head-to-toe in sun-block and start climbing! It’s fun, cheap, thrilling and often painful!

White Water Rafting

With so many mountains, there are bound to be quite a lot of fast flowing and rocky rivers to enjoy. Rafting is probably one of the most common extreme sports in Peru, and in the region of Cusco, there are many expert travel agencies that will take you out on the river. The Urubamba River (in the Sacred Valley) offers a thrilling full day experience which is suitable for beginners through to intermediary rafters. But hard-core rafters looking for the ultimate thrill need to go a little further afield. Cotahuasi Canyon is the deepest canyon in the world, and is also home to one of the world’s toughest rafting challenges. The route includes 6 days of full-on, technical class 4 – 5 rapids, uncharted pre-Inca ruins and spectacular campsites. Extreme sports in Peru don’t get much better than this! But be warned the Cotahuasi raft is for only the toughest travellers!

Zip Lines in the Jungle

15 Km’s from Machu Picchu, close to the village of Santa Teresa is Peru’s first canopy top zip line (also known as flying fox). A series cables with a total length of 2500 meters are broken up into six sections, with the longest section being 400 meters in length. At the fastest point on the wire it is possible to reach speeds of 60 Km/h (37 mph), which is enough to give the sensation of flight! Make sure that you are not scared of heights either, as part of the line hang 150 meters above the jungle floor. Extreme sports in Peru don’t get much more fun than this!

Extreme Sports Equal

Studies show that participation in a sport gives us the motivation to get and stay in shape. But what sport? Many of us grew up participating in team sports such as football, basketball, baseball, softball or soccer. Now, as adults, it is hard to get a group together to play these sports so we need to find an activity which we can participate in alone or with our life partner. Running, walking, biking, paddling, swimming and weight lifting are activities that come to mind which can be done solo or with our partner. However, we often become bored with these activities and find ourselves wanting to take a look at elevating them to another, more extreme level.

Running can be taken to what some would consider the extreme level by participating in a marathon which is 26 plus miles, or even to the more extreme level of ultra-marathon which is 50 or even 100 miles. If the individual is prepared, the benefits of long distance running are great for both mental and physical health. That’s not to say you will run fast, but with training and will power you can finish and feel really good about yourself in the process. It is a matter of challenging yourself and taking the time to train.

Swimming can also be taken to the level of endurance swimming for long distances, although most people do this by getting involved in triathlons that involve swimming, running and biking. The ultimate challenge would be the Ironman Triathlon which involves and 2.54 mile swim, 112 mile bike race and finally a marathon. Participation in this event takes a great deal of dedication and training.

Road biking, one of the better know long distance endurance activities is taken to another level when it is taken off the road and turned into mountain biking. Mountain biking involves cycling on hiking trails and couples steep uphill climbs with exhilarating downhill runs. Mountain biking is great exercise and takes as much nerve as it does training.

Paddling is also stepped up when you put your canoe or kayak into rapidly flowing white water. Anyone who has paddled fifteen miles on a section of river with class 3 and class 4 rapids will attest to the fact that this is an extreme workout. However, white water paddling is probably one of the most dangerous of extreme sports so start slow and gain as much experience as you can.

Weight lifting and strength training finds it own extreme in outdoor Rock Climbing. Rock climbing can occur at many levels, from bouldering to multi-pitch/multi-day climbs such as the big wall of Half Dome in Yosemite. A blend a balance, agility, flexibility and strength all come into play. With the fear of falling added in, rock climbing will get you pumped greater than any weight machine.

It is recommended that if you think you might want to take your sport to the extreme, you should first consult your doctor to see that your body is ready to step it up. Next you need to consult an expert, do some research and if possible take a class. In doing so, you will get extreme exercise out of your extreme sport and have an extreme high in the process.

Space Diving Is the Ultimate Extreme Sport

Space diving is when a person jumps from a plane or spacecraft high enough to enter the Earth’s atmosphere. According to a 2007 article in the Telegraph out of the United Kingdom, this extreme sport will soon become a popular daredevil sport just like bungee jumping and skydiving.

In 1960 US Air Force captain Joe Kittinger jumped from an altitude of 20 miles and reached a speed of 700 miles while diving from space. Now skydiving enthusiasts want to break this record. Those who wish to engage in this extreme sport should also be aware that the risk of death is very likely and so far 22 people have died while trying to do this.

There are a few brave persons that are willing to do space diving. Daredevil Felix Baumgartner plans to achieve this goal during the summer and he wants to leap from a height of 36 kilometers above New Mexico according to the Space Exploration Network. Baumgartner also feels that with his projected victory he’ll get people interested in space diving as an extreme sport.

Because diving from low earth orbit (LEO) is an extreme form of skydiving, you should get months of training with a certified trainer who has experience in the sport. You should also purchase specialized accident insurance and life insurance because this activity is high-risk and you could suffer injuries or even death. You should also research which types of suits and other gear that’s required for space diving. Ask your instructor lots of questions and make sure you’re physically and mentally prepared before you make your first (and maybe only) attempt.

Researchers are developing an ideal suit for space divers in the future. They mentioned that the suit will contain a detachable helmet, gloves and boots and this suit will include a liquid-cooled thermal regulation system. The suit will have small gas jets to help the body adjust to weightlessness while in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and this suit will come with protection against oxygen leaks.

There are some benefits of space diving. It allows you to explore your planet in a way you can’t explore just by reading about it or watching documentaries about the planet. If you go space jumping you’re in a better place to discuss what you learned about the planet with others. Space diving allows you to take risks in life and accomplish a goal that very few people are able to do. It also tests your human abilities and mental strength in ways you never thought of.
