Overview of Slacklining

What is slacklining?

Slacklining is a way to balance and/or walk between two points, often trees, on tensioned webbing usually an inch or two wide. Many people think it is the same as tightrope walking but it’s more like walking on a really skinny trampoline. The slackline will sway back and forth and bounce up and down as you walk across. It not only tests your focus and determination but is also a great core and lower body workout.

There are a few different styles of slacklining that include tricklining, slackline yoga, highlining, rodeo slacklining, waterlining and windlining. Each brings about its own set of new challenges.

Tricklining is a very popular style of slacklining that usually done low to the ground. Trickliners showcase an impressive array of technical flips and tricks. The tricks range in difficulty. Some of the more simple tricks include walking forward and backward, turning around, dropping to a knee and jumping onto the line from the ground. The more advanced tricks include jumping, surfing, back and chest bouncing, flips and spins.

Slackline yoga is when you do yoga poses on a slackline. This type of slacklining is usually performed on a one-inch line with low tension. Slacklining with little tension makes the line a lot more sensitive to each movement made. Low tension on a line is a great challenge by itself. So doing yoga poses on said line takes a great deal of concentration and skill.

Highlining is when the slackline is elevated high above a surface. Highlines are usually set up between two rocks that have a big drop. Most highliners use a safety harness or leash to keep the sport as safe as possible. However, pros like Andy Lewis and Dean Potter have been known to walk highlines without a leash. That increases the risk but makes the completion that much more impressive.

Rodeo slacklining is when the ends of the slackline are placed high with no tension. This causes the slackline to hang down like a “U” shape. Rodeo slacklining allows the opportunity to use the slackline as a swing. It is also a great style to surf the line because of the amount of back and forth movement.

Waterlining is when the slackline is set above water including lakes, rivers and pools. The reflection of the surface of the water can be a distraction making it more difficult to keep focus. Waterlines can be set up ranging high above the surface of the water to just below the surface. Waterlining can be very useful to practice tricks on.

Windlining is when the slackline is set up in very windy conditions. Even a slight wind will cause the slackline to ripple and/or shake. The windier it is the harder it becomes to maintain balance. This makes windlining a great challenge.

An Amazing Sport That Tests Your Balance and Agility

Have you seen trapeze artists walking on a tight rope and balancing themselves precariously in circuses and in local village fairs? I am sure you watched with fascinated awe and with bated breath as the artists performed their daredevil stunts!

Well, there is a name for this daredevilry – Slacklining. It is a sport where a small flat sturdy rope usually made of nylon is tied between two points or two trees. In this dynamic game called Slacklining, you are required to balance yourself and walk down this rope from one point to another point.

Slacklining is normally practiced in city parks, in your backyard or garden, in countryside farmhouse gardens, on university campuses and the more gutsy ones of the lot practice their dare bare tight rope walks some 3000 feet above the level of the ground.

And why do people do it? As you can understand, Slacklining is a fun activity for those who seek adventure and thrill. Some people pursue this sport for obvious athletic and sporting benefits. There are also people who are followers of this sport for a meditative objective.

You can sharpen your awareness skills through this sport. It ensures Great fun and is a great tool for teambuilding. And of course, it is a great idea for a family or company event. Naturally this sport is becoming popular all over the world.

If you are extremely adventurous, then you can tie the rope across 2 posts or 2 trees keeping the rope suspended over water (of a shallow pond or lake or pool) and walk over it. The more fainthearted ones can tie the rope a few inches above the ground.

There is a lot of similarity between high wire walking or tight rope walking and Slacklining. The only difference is that tubular nylon webbing is used in case of the latter. Slacklining has ceased to be the monopoly of daredevil acrobats and is slowly entering the lives of common people.

It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the slackline revolution will take the world by storm in the next few years. Some of the stuff you require for Slacklining are beginner slackline kits, runners, superior quality sewn slackline though the dreaded truck ratchet is hardly required.

You can easily avail of slackline kits via online stores. Slackline kits cost around $ 75 to $ 80 in USA or 64 euros or 58 pounds. The contents inside slackline kits are usually a ratchet that is fixed to a band 2 meters in length and a 15 meter long band that is 5 cm in width. There are also full detailed instructions inside each box. And the colors are variable.

Intro to the Slackline

Obviously, people have been doing balancing activities forever. Although the term slackline is new, it’s not really a new thing. Kids and adults are naturally drawn to try to balance on things. I can’t walk by a retaining wall or guard rail with my kids without one of them wanting to climb on it and usually they want to hold my hand so they don’t fall.

Over the years, people have done tight rope walking and other feats of balance. The cool thing about slacklining is that it’s provided a safer and easier way for a lot of people to enjoy the sport of balancing.. Most people haven’t had access to a tight rope and a lot of other things that are available to balance on are too high and too hard to be safe. Those factors have not stopped some of us from risking life and limb to try it anyway. But now with slacklines, there is a better option.

The actual sport of slacklining got off the ground in the rock climbing mecca of Yosemite National Park back in the 70’s. I guess the rock climbers there needed something to do on rest days and rainy days when they couldn’t climb. By the way, trying to fill gaps of time between recreation with another type of recreation sounds like a nice problem to have. So, they would challenge each other to walk on the hanging chains in the parking lots.

Eventually, they got the idea to use webbing that they usually used for climbing and tie it between two trees. This gave them a portable option that they could set up anywhere. Slacklines made it possible to set it up low to the ground. The slackline webbing was also not hard like chain or a metal bar, so if you fell on it, it wouldn’t hurt much.

The sport has remained popular with rock climbers. It’s a good way to increase your balancing skills which naturally helps your climbing.

Over the years, more and more people have gotten into it, though, and several great options have become available to purchase. In the past it was kind of hard to set up a slackline. You needed certain gear, usually used for climbing, and several people to get it tight enough. Now, there are kits that make it easy, and they are pretty cheap for a piece of sporting equipment. This has made it possible for anyone to try out the sport.

I’m very naturally attracted to the sport of slacklining. I’ve always been into testing my skills of balance. Ever since I was a kid I’ve tried to balance on anything that I could: fences, playground equipment, hand rails, retaining walls. When I heard about slacklining it was something I immediately wanted to get into.

I’ve done a little bit of slacklining on other people’s equipment, but I finally ordered my own slackline and I’m very excited to spend more time doing this sport. I’m also looking forward to having another “play time” activity that I can do relatively safely with my kids. I’d much rather invest in a slackline for them to play in our backyard on than see them doing some of the things that I did when I was a kid. YIKES!

If you’re looking to try out a new sport, I highly recommend slacklining for several reasons. It will improve your balance and joint strength. It’s relatively cheap to get into. You can do it almost anywhere. It’s a fun activity alone or as a group. You’ll be excited as you get better and better.
